Pouched Rat Rescue

(We appologise but are unable to take on any further rescues at the moment, please contact the NPRS who may be able to advise you of a home on their Foster Network).

Both Gambian and Emins Pouched Rats are still considered to be very new within the domesticated pets arena. Because of this there are cases where breeders are mating unsocialised pairs which are then producing babies that cannot be handled until they have been weaned from their mother at around 4-5 weeks old.

This results in juveniles being sold that are almost ferral in nature and require a lot of specialised handling; unfortunately there are a lot of people who do not have the time or the experience to handle rats of this temperament which has in some cases led to hospitalisation from severe bites.

As a result of the above, there has been a rise in the number of rats that are bought and are being either abandoned or past from owner to owner  as they simply cannot be accommodated due to their lack of socialisation.

Depending on space we may be able to take on difficult or unwanted rats and provide them with the love and attention that they require. We have the means to work with these animals and provide the correct stimulation and socialisation. If we are unable to assist you with rehoming, we can put you in touch with specialist keepers who may be able to help you.

Should you have a rat that requires rehoming, please feel free to contact us and we shall endeavour to assist you with your enquiry.
